Nonlinear Structural Evaluation of Buildings with Irregular Floor Plans using Artificial Seismic Accelerograms

Anco W.; Quispe Y.; Ruiz J. · International Conference on Civil, Structural and Transportation Engineering (2026) · DOI: 10.11159/iccste26.143

Resumen

In the seismic context of Metropolitan Lima, multi-family buildings with irregular floor plans, such as re-entrant corners, present a high structural risk during seismic events. This study proposes the generation of artificial accelerograms and thei r application to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of buildings with re-entrant corner irregularities. A Fourier spectral fitting methodology was used to generate artificial accelerograms compatible with the seismic design spectra of the current Peruvian standard E.030. These artificial records were applied in nonlinear dynamic analysis simulations using ETABS software, evaluating the structural behavior of buildings with L, C, and T floor plan configurations. Preliminary results show that the generated artificial accelerograms exhibit high tension with the design spectrum, reaching a relative root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.2% and a root mean square percentage error (MAPE) of 1.3% compared to the actual record. This spectral compatibility allows for the simulation of a reliable representation of the dynamic structural behavior of the evaluated irregular buildings, showing percentage variations in indicator parameters such as absolute displacement (Dmáx), maximum interstory drift (θmáx), and shear force (Vc). The average error margins obtained were 3.75% (E-W) and 6.39% (N-S) for Dmáx, 3.37% (E-W) and 3.42% (N-S) for θmáx, and 3.50% (E-W) and 3.60% (N-S) for Vc. The fact that most of these variations are below 5% confirms the physical integrity of the simulated seismic demand. This approach optimizes the seismic evaluation of buildings in scenarios with limited availability of real seismic records, offering an effective tool for structural analysis and design in areas of high seismic vulnerability, such as the city of Lima.
