Resumen
Alzheimer’s disease is a complex and multifactorial entity, which constitutes a real challenge for public health, since it mainly affects the geriatric population, which is increasing over the years. However, there is a large gap in knowledge regarding therapy, since the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease are not well known and current therapies are inefficient. For this reason, through this work we seek to explore new therapeutic options, specifically, in the field of epigenetics, a previously unexplored field, and in which work has been done in recent years through clinical trials, to determine its effectiveness in the progression of the disease. To do this, a search was carried out in PubMed, ScienceDirect and Scielo, selecting articles of interest and conducting a narrative review that includes the description of the disease, pathogenesis, the fundamental concepts of epigenetics and the clinical trials that are currently being carried out. Concluding that clinical trials demonstrate that various types of drugs with epigenetic activity have managed to reduce the progression of cognitive deterioration and improve short-term memory.
