NEW APPROACH TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF GEOCELLS IN DRAINAGE STRUCTURES FILLED WITH CONCRETE MATERIALS: SUBMERGED ABRASION TEST

Caressato Junior W.; Gireli T.Z.; Fierro G. · Proceedings of the IAHR World Congress (2025)

Resumen

This study presents a new approach to assess the influence of geocells on cementitious drainage structures using submerged abrasion tests. The research combines laboratory experiments based on ASTM D7207-05 and ASTM C1138M-19 standards, computer simulations, and empirical analyses to investigate the impact of geocells on the hydraulic and economic performance of these structures. The study aims to address existing gaps in the literature with the following objectives: to evaluate the hydraulic effects of the use of geocells, to compare drainage systems with and without geocells, and to develop design sizing tools. The methodology includes controlled sample tests subjected to abrasive loads using metal spheres and sand to simulate real-world conditions. Computer simulations will evaluate parameters such as critical velocities, acting stresses, and mass loss, while tools such as design equations and graphs will be developed to aid in the calculation process. Expected results include increased abrasion resistance, material savings, increased durability, and reduced maintenance costs. Furthermore, the approach offers sustainable and efficient drainage solutions, promoting a balance between performance, cost and sustainability.
