Resumen
In the early 1960s, a group of young people from various left-wing political organisations began meeting in the La Teja neighbourhood of Montevideo to discuss the conditions necessary for revolution. This marked the inception of an autonomous organisation, formally established as from 1966–67, known as the MLN-T, by its acronym in Spanish (National Liberation Movement-Tupamaros). This study focuses on the period between the organisation's defeat by the State and the negotiation processes initiated as the dictatorship transitioned into democracy, during which a number of Tupamaros went to join the Frente Amplio (Broad Front). The negotiation process of the ex-guerrillas, which took between the end of violence and the victory of the Frente Amplio, can be analysed through their memoirs. This work is based on the analysis of testimonial literature, official communiqués, and semi-structured interviews, aiming to identify the main axes of the MLN-T’s transitional memory, which far from homogeneous, reflects internal differences that existed within the organisation at the end of its armed phase.
