Resumen

Concrete structures often face significant durability challenges due to pollution, humidity, and chemical attacks, leading to high maintenance costs and impacting regional sustainability. To enhance their resilience, the incorporation of nanostructured photocatalytic materials, such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) emerges as an innovative solution. This study aimed to investigate the impact of nanostructured TiO2 on concrete properties to increase the durability of infrastructure projects. The methodology, deductive-experimental in nature, included evaluating mechanical properties (compression and flexural strength) according to NTP E.060 and ASTM C39/C39M standards, analyzing photocatalytic activity, and determining the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show a significant improvement in compressive strength (a 15% increase at 28 days, reaching 69.7 MPa with a 1.5% TiO2 addition) and flexural strength (an increase from 10.10% to 42.44%). A 30% reduction in capillary porosity and a 40% reduction in water absorption were observed, which improves impermeability and resistance to aggressive agents. These findings suggest that TiO2 densifies the concrete's microstructure, extending the lifespan of infrastructure. It is concluded that the addition of this titanium dioxide nanomaterial substantially increases the durability and performance of photocatalytic concrete. This research contributed to the development of advanced materials and sustainable construction solutions, important for more resilient and low-maintenance infrastructure. © LEIRD 2025.All rights reserved.
