Mining, trade unions, and collective bargaining

Manky O.; Mejía C. · Mining and the Peruvian State: Social and Environmental Sustainability (2026) · DOI: 10.4324/9781003746867-9

Resumen

Despite the lower profile of unionized workers in disputes over mining in the last few decades, labor relations remain an important issue even though unions face significant organizational problems. The chapter seeks to trace patterns of change and continuity in labor relations in the neoliberal era in which, despite persistent informality, collective bargaining continues, lengthy strikes are not uncommon, and the state continues to play a significant mediating role in labor disputes. The practice of outsourcing reduces the scope of unions to negotiate sector-wide labor contracts, with collective bargaining reduced mostly to the local level. The chapter ends with suggestions as to how the structure of industrial relations might be improved.
