Mining and taxation in Peru

De Echave J.; Francke P. · Mining and the Peruvian State: Social and Environmental Sustainability (2026) · DOI: 10.4324/9781003746867-16

Resumen

Anxious to attract investment in mining, successive governments have resisted pressures to increase the tax burden on the sector. Overall, the tax take in Peru is low by international standards and needs to be increased if standards in key spending areas like public education and health are to be enhanced. Tax evasion rates are also high. Mining taxes are low in comparison with other Latin American countries, opening the way for increases without major loss of competitiveness. And with prices of key mineral remaining buoyant, the profits of mining companies have increased. As Peru seeks to take advantage of future demand for critical minerals, the state needs to be able to increase the tax take if the increased rents from mining are to benefit the development of the country,
