Microplastics: From animal to human

De-la-Torre G.E. · Microplastics in Agriculture and Food Science: Methods for Identification and Remediation (2025) · DOI: 10.1016/b978-0-443-22210-8.00017-1

Resumen

Due to the extensive use and persistence of plastic products, microplastics (MPs) have become ubiquitous contaminants in natural, rural, and urban environments. The ingestion of MPs by animals of multiple taxa has also been extensively reported, including those meant for human consumption. This chapter addresses the multiple aspects surrounding the sources of contamination, exposure, and accumulation of MPs in livestock and poultry animals and products, as well as the pathways to human intake and fate. MP research in farm animals and their products is still scarce, leading to several knowledge gaps that need further investigation. Furthermore, recent studies are attempting to shed light on the fate of ingested MPs and their potential health effects.
