MHUTEMP: An Open-Source IoT Solution for Reliable Real-Time Humidity and Temperature Monitoring in Healthcare Facilities

Lon-Kan C.; Rodriguez R.; Lon-Kan I. · Proceedings of the 2025 IEEE 32nd International Conference on Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computing, INTERCON 2025 (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/intercon67304.2025.11244678

Resumen

The conservation of blood bags in hospital blood banks requires maintaining a strict and continuous temperature range between 2°C and 6 °C. However, most refrigeration units in public healthcare facilities lack integrated logging and remote monitoring, relying instead on manual data recording-a process prone to human error and delayed anomaly detection. To address these limitations, this paper presents MHUTEMP, a low-cost, open-source IoT -based system for real-time temperature monitoring in blood bank refrigerators. MHUTEMP integrates an ESP8266 microcontroller, a DS18B20 sensor for internal temperature measurement, and a DHT22 sensor for ambient conditions. Sensor data are displayed locally on a 1.3' OLED screen and transmitted via WebSocket to a Node.js backend, which updates a web interface every two seconds and stores readings in a MongoDB database every ten minutes. The frontend, developed with Next.js, provides real-time dashboards and historical visualisations. The system has been officially calibrated by Test & Control S.A.C., a laboratory accredited under ISO/IEC 17025 standards. The certificate of calibration validates temperature and humidity readings, providing correction values and uncertainties. These results confirm that MHUTEMP meets precision requirements for clinical cold chain scenarios and highlights the role of open-source IoT solutions in enhancing healthcare operations-particularly in resource-limited settings.
