Resumen

In the light of the personalist interpretation of the metaphysical notion of substance, it could be argued that this notion is perfectly compatible with a conception that subordinates the interests of the individual to the collectivity. In fact, for personalism the substantialist conception of the person leads to the denial of personal freedom, insofar as it implies determination and fixism. Now, the purpose of this paper is to highlight several arguments capable of responding to the concerns that emerge from the interpretation in question. Through the analysis of some doctrines of ancient and scholastic metaphysics, it will become clear that it is not necessary to abandon the category of substance to explain the open and dynamic character of the personal being.
