Resumen
In this paper we study the development of classical melodrama schemes in relation to the structure, purpose, themes and character construction in the novel Pantaleón y las visitadoras [Captain Pantoja and the Special Service] (1973), by Mario Vargas Llosa. We observe how the use of irony makes possible the manifestation of the pathos of the relationships between the characters, constructed with Manichean tints and complex features, which otherwise would not reach fictionality. The common theme of family roots and dishonor is also evident.
