Medical education and CPR: Ready to save lives?

Peña-Pinedo G. · Revista Chilena de Anestesia (2024) · DOI: 10.25237/revchilanestv53n3-05

Resumen

Introduction: Cardiopulmonary arrest (CA) is a critical medical emergency with potentially lethal consequences. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is pivotal for its reversal, yet the lack of CPR knowledge is concerning, even among medical students. Objective: To assess the level of CPR knowledge among medical students, identify related factors, and propose improvement strategies. Methods: Literature review (2013-2023) on PubMed and Google Scholar. 23 studies were included. Results: Widespread CPR knowledge deficiencies were found among medical students in several countries. Prior training, practical experience, and exposure to real-life scenarios enhanced knowledge. Knowledge retention decreased over time. Conclusions: The lack of CPR knowledge is a global issue. Effective strategies include hands-on training and integrating CPR into the curriculum. Knowledge retention improves through continuous practice. Enhancing CPR education is imperative, with mandatory training in universities and a focus on ongoing education, preparing future doctors and healthcare professionals to effectively intervene in CA situations and ensure the quality of emergency care.
