MATERNAL CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH NEONATAL COMPLICATIONS AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN WITH COVID-19 TREATED AT A REFERRAL HOSPITAL IN LIMA, PERU, 2020

Torpoco F.E.T.; Vergara M.N. · Revista de la Facultad de Medicina Humana (2026) · DOI: 10.25176/rfmh.v26i3.8531

Resumen

Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during pregnancy may be associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, particularly in the presence of comorbidities or symptomatic maternal disease. Objective: To evaluate the association between maternal clinical characteristics and the prevalence of neonatal complications among newborns of pregnant women with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treated at a referral hospital in Lima, Peru, during 2020. Methods: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted based on a review of medical records. Of 678 records identified, 40 were excluded and 638 were eligible, of which 172 mother–newborn dyads were randomly selected. The composite outcome was defined as the presence of at least one neonatal complication. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) were estimated using Poisson regression with robust variance, along with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). Results: Twenty-nine neonates (16.9%; 95% CI: 12.0–23.2) had at least one complication. The most frequent complications were coagulopathy (3.5%), respiratory distress syndrome (2.9%), small for gestational age (2.9%), and low birth weight (2.9%). Maternal risk factors were associated with a higher prevalence of neonatal complications (aPR = 2.97; 95% CI: 1.42–6.22; p = 0.004). Respiratory symptoms were not significantly associated with the outcome after adjustment (aPR = 2.08; 95% CI: 0.98–4.44; p = 0.057). Conclusion: In this hospital-based sample, the presence of maternal risk factors was associated, after adjustment, with a higher prevalence of neonatal complications. Respiratory symptoms were not significantly associated with the neonatal outcome. © Artículo publicado por la Revista de la Facultad de Medicina Humana de la Universidad Ricardo Palma.
