Resumen
Self-harm is a significant problem among adolescents, which has increased in recent years; it is related to family and quality-of-life factors. The objective of this study was to analyze the mediating role of life satisfaction between family satisfaction and self-harm. This was a basic, non-experimental, explanatory study. Data were collected from 271 adolescents. Structural equation modeling was used. The findings show a good fit to the model (χ^2(33) = 42.2, p = 0.132, CFI = 0.986, RMSEA = 0.032, SRMR = 0.040), where life satisfaction mediates the relationship between both variables (β = -0.22, p = 0.011; 95% CI [-3.4, -0.6]). Likewise, family satisfaction was found to have a direct effect on self-harm (β = -0.10, p = 0.238). It is concluded that life satisfaction plays a mediating role, and that the quality of family relationships has a protective effect against self-harm. Further studies on self-harm in adolescents are needed to contribute to interventions focused on family and life satisfaction.
