Library to facilitate the implementation of accessible web interfaces for users with visual disabilities

Diaz S.; Rodriguez H.; Barrientos A. · CISCI - Conferencia Iberoamericana en Sistemas, Cibernetica e Informatica (2024) · DOI: 10.54808/cisci2024.01.389

Resumen

This article addresses the problem of implementing accessible web applications for visually impaired users considering the scarcity of appropriate libraries to improve accessibility to multimedia content on web pages. The lack of appropriate tools limits the potential of applications to offer an inclusive and accessible experience. Our main contribution consists in the development of a library that integrates accessibility tools such as screen zoom, color filters and a screen reader capable of describing videos and images on web pages. This solution fills a gap in existing accessibility tools by offering specific features for multimedia content not adapted to visually impaired people. To achieve this, we implemented a service that allows web pages to offer accessibility to their multimedia content through the library. Our experimentation includes a usability survey applied to people with visual impairment, who meet ICD-11 diagnoses with codes 9D44 (color deficiency), 9D90.3 (severe vision impairment) and 9D90.6 (blindness). In summary, this article presents an innovative solution to improve web accessibility especially with regard to multimedia content. © CISCI - Simposium Iberoamericano en Educacion, Cibernetica e Informatica 2024.
