Resumen

The proliferation of pigeons represents an urban pest problem and a health risk to people because they transmit various infectious diseases that can have serious consequences, such as lung damage, pneumonia, hepatitis, brain disorders, and even death. Furthermore, they detract from the city’s appearance. Among the factors facilitating the uncontrolled reproduction of these birds are: indiscriminate feeding by citizens in public squares, the availability of solid waste, and the lack of predators and shelters (cornices, rooftops). Several districts across the country have implemented ordinances prohibiting the feeding of these birds and penalizing the creation of infection hotspots. The results have not met expectations. Given that humans are primarily responsible for the overpopulation of pigeons, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) has published various manuals for surveillance and control, prioritizing health education as the cornerstone for changing community habits. The main methods and techniques for pigeon pest control are: anti-perching, electric repellents, natural deterrents, falconry, population control, and trapping.
