Resumen
From the appearance of the work of José María Eguren (1874-1942) to the present, critics have pointed out his inclination towards children’s issues in many of his poems. However, this same criticism has emphasized analyzing other aspects of his work, equally relevant (symbolism, imagery, characters, style and forms, death and fantasy as topics, among others), and has neglected the theme of childhood. This article seeks to analyze the nature of childhood in the poetry of José María Eguren. To do this, we will first construct an operative concept of “children’s literature” from certain theoretical texts on children’s literature. Then, Eguren’s location in the corpus of Peruvian children’s literature will be evaluated from the anthologies and the most representative studies on the subject in question. Finally, on the basis of the above, some poems by Eguren that emphasize the proposal of children’s literature will be analyzed.
