Resumen
Introduction: In recent years, the intragastric balloon (IGB) has become a popular procedure in patients with overweight and obesity, as it represents a non-surgical and non-invasive option for managing excess weight. Objective: To describe the use of intragastric balloons (swallowable and endoscopic) as a treatment for adults with overweight or obesity. Methodology: a search strategy guided by the IOP model was applied, and the search was conducted in five different databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOHost, and ScienceDirect). Scientific information was also collected from various original articles under PRISMA guidelines, of which only 28 original articles were included. Results: The most significant weight loss observed after using the endoscopic intragastric balloon for 6 to 12 months was 25.71 kg and 22.03 kg. On the other hand, the lowest weight loss values were 3.95 kg and 4.6 kg, after using the swallowable IGB for 3 to 4 months, respectively. Conclusions: The IGB is a safe, effective, and innovative intervention for reducing overweight and obesity in adults, especially when treatment lasts between 6 and 12 months.
