Influence of Smoking on the Relationship of the Aortic Arch with Other Aortic Segments: Perspectives of Multiple Linear Regression

Guevara-Tirado A. · Iatreia (2026) · DOI: 10.17533/udea.iatreia.374

Resumen

Introduction: Smoking is a factor associated with structural alterations of the aorta, promoting aortic dilation and increasing the risk of aneurysms and dissections. Objective: To analyze the relationship between the diameter of the aortic arch and other aortic segments according to the presence or absence of smoking. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a secondary database of 801 adults. Measurements of the aortic segments were obtained using non-contrast computed tomography, from the sinus of Valsalva to the abdominal aorta at the origin of the celiac trunk. The relationship of the proximal and mid aortic arch with the other segments was evaluated using multiple linear regression, stratified by smoking history. Results: Among non-smokers (R² = 0.88), the proximal aortic arch showed positive associations with the sinus of Valsalva, the mid ascending aorta, the mid aortic arch, and the mid descending aorta, and a negative association with the proximal descending thoracic aorta. Among smokers (R² = 0.88), positive associations were observed with the sinus of Valsalva, the mid ascending aorta, and the mid aortic arch, and negative associations with the sinotubular junction and the proximal descending aorta. Conclusions: Smoking modifies the structural relationship between the aortic arch and other segments of the aorta.
