Resumen

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cultivar and nitrogen fertilization on dry matter (DM) yield and nutritional composition of Pennisetum sp. commonly used for cattle feeding. The crude protein (CP), ash (As), crude fibre (CF), neutral and acid detergent fibre (NDF, ADF), in vitro digestibility (IVD), and gross energy (GE) were analysed on DM. Data was collected on days 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 after a uniform cut. A complete randomized design with a 3x2 factorial arrangement consisting of three cultivars (CT 115, Cuba 22, Cuba 51) and two fertilizations (with and without fertilizer) was applied (six treatments with three repetitions each). Cultivar type significantly influenced the dry matter yield and nutritional composition of Pennisetum sp., while nitrogen fertilization levels had no effect on the evaluated variables. CT 115 showed a higher DM yield. CP remained similar between cultivars from day 30 and 60, with an increase on day 75 in Cuba 51. The ash content of CT 115 was higher. The CF content increased in Cuba 22 from 45 to 75 day and was highest in CT 115 on day 90. Differences in NDF were only observed on day 90, with lower levels found in Cuba 51 and CT 115. However, ADF was the highest in Cuba 51 on day 30 and in Cuba 22 on days 75 and 90. The Cuba 51 cultivar exhibited higher IVD and GE on days 60, 75, and 90 compared to the other two cultivars. IVD showed a positive correlation with DM, fibre, and GE and a negative correlation with detergent fibre. These findings highlight Cuba 51’s potential to enhance livestock development in the Amazonas region. © Los autores.
