Resumen

Currently in Peru it is estimated that around 5 million people use polluting fuels as their primary source of domestic energy. The objective was to determine the incidence of respiratory diseases in homes that cook with polluting fuel in a community of Cajamarca, Peru. The study was descriptive and cross-sectional during the first semester of 2022. The sample consisted of 159 heads of household belonging to a rural community in Cajamarca. As a data collection instrument, a 10-item survey was applied that included sociodemographic data and respiratory symptoms. For data analysis, a table was designed with the information collected in Microsoft Excel and processed with the statistical package SPSS 20.0 to obtain incidences and relationship between variables through Chi square with p < 0.05. As results, an incidence of respiratory diseases of 59.75% was found, 67.92% used firewood, 18.87% coal and 9.43% manure, the most affected gender was sex with 36.48%, however, no significant statistical association was found between gender and the incidence of respiratory diseases (X2: 0.0002; p: 0.9884), the age of 30-39 had an incidence of respiratory diseases of 24.53%, within the symptoms were cough (95.79%), expectoration (87.37%), weakness (43.16%), difficulty breathing (40.00%) and tachycardia (31.58%). In conclusion, it is necessary to carry out public actions that can reduce the use of polluting fuels in homes in order to reduce the incidence of respiratory diseases in rural areas of Peru.
