IN VITRO PROPAGATION OF NOLANA THINOPHILA I. M. JOHNST. THROUGH AXILLARY SHOOT INDUCTION: A POTENTIAL COASTAL ORNAMENTAL SPECIES

Suca D.Q.; Martínez N.A.; Medina F.M.; Manchego L.M.; Rodríguez H.L.; Zhang C. · Propagation of Ornamental Plants (2025)

Resumen

Nolana thinophila (Solanaceae) is an endemic species from the coastal areas of Arequipa, Peru, with high ornamental potential due to its violet flowers, mat-forming growth habit, and salinity tolerance, making it suitable for beautifying and restoring coastal landscapes. However, habitat degradation has led to its classification as vulnerable, highlighting the need for conservation strategies. This study aimed to develop a method for in vitro propagation of N. thinophila. Nodal segments were cultivated in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium after disinfection with a 10% solution of commercial sodium hypochlorite (NaClO, 4% active chlorine), achieving 100% disinfection. During the multiplication phase, axillary shoots cultured in MS medium supplemented with 1 mg l-1 BAP resulted in the highest axillary shoot multiplication. The optimal for rooting was half-strength MS (100% rooting). During acclimatization, plantlets were successfully grown in sterile vermiculite and irrigated with half-strength Hoagland and Arnon solution under greenhouse conditions, achieving 100% survival.
