Resumen
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) and equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) on fertility, lamb rate and prolificacy during the non-reproductive season of Creole ewes under family rearing conditions in the Puno region, Peru, located at 3905 meters above sea level. Forty primiparous and 40 multiparous ewes were used to which intravaginal sponges (60 mg of MAP) were placed for 14 days. After the sponges were removed, 500 IU of eCG was administered to half of the animals and the other 20 were left as controls (without eCG). The ewes were inseminated via the cervix with fresh Corriedale ram semen 48 hours after the sponges were removed. The fertility (pregnancy) rate was 85 and 57.5% for sheep with and without eCG, respectively (p<0.001). The prolificacy rate in sheep with and without eCG was 185.3 and 100%, respectively. It is concluded that the use of eCG in the heat synchronization protocol has positive effects on increasing the lambing rate and prolificacy in sheep under conditions of peasant communities in the Andean region. ©Los autores.
