Implementation of TPM methodology to improve productivity in the grinding area of a mining concentration plant

Angeles R.M.S.; Quispe A.E.G. · AIP Conference Proceedings (2026) · DOI: 10.1063/5.0308447

Resumen

This study examines the implementation of the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) methodology in the grinding area of the Minera Chinalco del Perú concentrator plant in 2023. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, the impact of TPM on efficiency, effectiveness, and overall productivity was evaluated. The research was conducted over five months, with pre-test measurements in June-July and post-test in September-October. Observation techniques, surveys, and documentary analysis were used to collect data. Statistical analysis included normality tests and the Wilcoxon Z test to compare results before and after TPM implementation. The results showed statistically significant improvements in all variables analyzed: Efficiency (equipment availability) increased from 91.15% to 97.41%. Effectiveness (actual vs. scheduled production) improved from 100.43% to 104.11%. Overall productivity increased from 91.41% to 101.31%. Additionally, monthly savings of $2,242,650 were estimated due to the reduction of unplanned downtime. The study concludes that the implementation of TPM is an effective strategy to improve productivity in mining operations, demonstrating tangible benefits in terms of operational efficiency and economic performance. The results suggest that TPM can be a valuable tool for other companies in the mining sector seeking to optimize their operations.
