Implementation of a SIEM for the Protection of Confidential Information in Space Industries

Quintana Quispe F.R.; Venturi Calero D.E. · Proceedings of the International Astronautical Congress, IAC (2025) · DOI: 10.52202/083105-0031

Resumen

In the space industry, safeguarding confidential information related to technological development, research, and next-generation designs is essential to ensure both competitiveness and operational continuity. This article focuses on describing how the implementation of a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system can enhance the security posture of space organizations by providing monitoring and event correlation capabilities specifically designed to protect networks and systems handling sensitive data. To this end, we examine the key technical and organizational requirements that enable space enterprises to successfully integrate diverse data sources—such as server logs, network devices, databases, and endpoint solutions—into a SIEM that facilitates the early detection of both internal and external threats. Fundamental aspects are addressed, including the definition of correlation rules aligned with sector-specific risks, the efficient management of alerts, and the orchestration of various security tools. In addition, the importance of network segmentation, cross-departmental collaboration, and the development of threat intelligence capabilities is emphasized as essential factors to continuously improve SIEM effectiveness. The results obtained in the test environment demonstrate the successful integration of multiple data sources, the effective detection of simulated incidents, and a significant reduction in the mean time to detect (MTTD) to just a few seconds, thereby confirming the feasibility of the proposed approach. Overall, this study seeks to provide a systematic framework for the implementation of SIEM within space industry organizations, supporting the protection of data confidentiality and ensuring operational resilience in an increasingly complex technological environment.
