IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE RURAL COMMUNITY OF CONOPA, POMABAMBA, ANCASH, PERU FROM THE VOICE OF WOMEN, COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND QUECHUA- SPEAKING AUTHORITIES

Chavarría L.T.; Calcin Figueroa J.E. · Dialogo Andino (2025)

Resumen

The purpose of this article is to analyze the impacts of climate change in the rural community of Conopa, Pomabamba, Ancash, Peru, through the voices of women, community members, and Quechua-speaking authorities to describe its effects on agriculture, livestock, wildlife, native flora, and ecosystems (snow-capped mountains, lagoons, rivers, and springs). This qualitative research used the phenomenological method and focus group technique to interview participants in their native language. The information was transcribed into Ancash Quechua, translated into Spanish, and analyzed inductively. The results show that climate change is real, with devastating, catastrophic, and irreversible impacts on agriculture, livestock, wildlife, native flora, and ecosystems. The conclusions reflect changes in species’ habitat, seasonal imbalances, and extreme phenomena that wreak havoc in all areas of the Conopa community. The decline and extinction of medicinal plants, native flowers, trees, snow-capped mountains, rivers, lakes, and springs can be documented, along with the migration and death of animals due to food and water shortages. These factors threaten the very existence of rural, peasant, and agricultural communities that rely on natural resources. Future projections are very devastating for the next generations.
