Impact of the use of fertilizers on agricultural soils. A systematic review of the scientific literature

Florimar Cisneros Jayo G.; Darlin Nonones Vásquez N. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2024) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2024.1.1.391

Resumen

The increase in productivity and quality of food in recent decades has brought about the intensive use of fertilizers in agriculture, causing the alteration of soil quality and causing its long-term loss if it is not adequately controlled. The main objective of this review was to collect information that samples the impact at the physical, chemical and biological level of the use of fertilizers on agricultural soils. The applied methodology was based on the PRISMA method and took into account the eligibility criteria, sources of information, search strategies, study selection process, data extraction process, data list, risk of bias assessment and synthesis methods. The results revealed both positive and negative effects on the structure and composition of soils after the application of different types of fertilizers, evidencing notable changes in properties such as water retention, nutrient availability, pH, biomass, structural stability, population density, bacterial, among others. Furthermore, it is evident that organic fertilizers provide better results and did not change the quality of the soils unlike inorganic ones. This article highlights the need for more research in this area and provides relevant information on the impact of fertilizers on agricultural soils. In conclusion, its effect on soil quality varies depending on the type, quantity and duration of exposure. This compilation study shows how various authors agree that fertilizers affect the physical, chemical and biological levels of agricultural soils.
