Impact of ergonomics on work performance in the manufacturing industry: A systematic review

Elvis Campos Naval J.; Alonso Castañeda Lopez V.; Alberto Aparicio Ballena J. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2025.1.1.802

Resumen

This systematic study examines the impact of ergonomics on job performance within the manufacturing sector. Originating in the 1940s, ergonomics has established itself as a vital discipline aimed at adapting work environments to human capabilities; its proper implementation not only prevents musculoskeletal injuries but also enhances efficiency, elevates work quality, and promotes employee well-being. Through an in-depth review of sources such as Scopus, 36 pertinent studies published between 2014 and 2024 were selected, offering robust evidence on how ergonomic interventions can positively transform workplace conditions. Findings reveal that inadequate application of ergonomic principles may lead to health issues, including muscular discomfort and elevated stress levels, which adversely affect work productivity. Most research focuses on large manufacturing industries, where lumbar and upper limb injuries are prevalent. To assess workplace performance, the most commonly used instruments were questionnaires and performance records, which have proven effective in identifying ergonomic risks. Furthermore, the importance of implementing ergonomic adjustments grounded in scientific research is emphasized to improve working conditions. Ultimately, effective ergonomics management not only benefits workers’ health but also enhances profitability and sustainability for manufacturing enterprises.
