Impact of Burnout on Suicidal Ideation in Medical Education

Moriano-De-Los Santos V.; Salas C.R.S.; Vela-Ruiz J.M. · Revista del Hospital Psiquiatrico de la Habana (2025)

Resumen

Introduction: Burnout syndrome is a condition characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal fulfillment, common among students and healthcare professionals due to high academic and work demands. Suicidal ideation, a global public health problem, is associated with multiple risk factors, such as burnout. Objective: Analyze the relationship between the dimensions of burnout and suicidal ideation, focusing on medical students and health professionals in training. Method: A literature review was carried out in PubMed and Google Scholar databases, covering publications from 2019 to 2024. The articles were selected according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: 51 articles were found in the review, and 31 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. 20 articles were excluded for not having correlation, so 11 articles were selected for the systematic review. Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between the dimensions of burnout syndrome and suicidal ideation, with emotional exhaustion as the most critical factor in medical students and health professionals in training, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. © Este material es publicado según los términos de la Licencia Creative Commons Atribución–NoComercial 4.0.
