Illegal Mining in a District of Peru through Satellite Images

Roman-Gonzalez A.; Romero-Alva V.; Vargas-Cuentas N.I. · Proceedings of the International Astronautical Congress, IAC (2022)

Resumen

The existence of illegal mining in Peru significantly affects biodiversity in both the flora and fauna that our country enjoys. Illegal mining produces indiscriminate logging in regions of the Peruvian Amazon, negatively impacting the ecosystem. In this sense, the population and the authorities must become aware of this, and precisely this work proposes using satellite images to raise awareness of this problem. One expects to obtain a more quantifiable evaluation of the affected areas and illegal mining progress in recent months based on image processing techniques. The obtained results are expected to have a tool that can help better decision-making by the competent authorities to combat illegal mining in Peru. Copyright
