Hydraulic modeling in the estimation of the increase in erosion in high Andean rivers with contraction of theriverbed due to the presence of derived dams

Vásquez L. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2021) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2021.1.1.168

Resumen

The downstream undermining of diversion dams is a natural process, which the engineer predicts in the design; which allows to size the protection elements for the correct functioning during its useful life, but there are many structures that fail due to the effect of unexpected undermining., which is why this work focuses on estimating the increase in the dimensions (depth, length and time) in the erosion pool downstream of derived dams, built on gravey sandy beds, which by their location in the river contract their natural channel, generating a high increase in kinetic energy in the discharge of the dissipating structure, which acts directly on the zone of changes in rigidity between the material of the energy dissipator and the river bed, whose consequence in the structure, is the undermining and its imminent failure. The research is based on physical and numerical modeling, based on the principles of hydraulic similarity (model- prototype). The results for the Huayrapongo dam, infer that the increases in the dimensions depth, length and time of erosion are related to the contraction of the channel (Δ%) by polynomial functions of fourth, second and third order, respectively.
