Resumen
This article analyzes the challenges faced by the Faculty of Sciences at the University of San Marcos, one of Peru’s leading centers for scientific training, between 1876 and 1895. This period was marked by the 1876 educational reform, the War of the Pacific, and subsequent political and economic instability. The article also examines the conditions for knowledge production, highlighting the theses of Margarita Práxedes Muñoz and Laura Rodríguez, considered pioneers of women’s participation in Peruvian science. Primary sources, such as the University Annals of San Marcos and the records of the Ministry of Education, are analyzed. The results show that, despite the halt in the modernization process of 1876 and the war, the reconstruction demonstrated the resilience of the university community, transforming it into a hub for the development of scientific knowledge and laying the foundations for an academic tradition that transcended its era.
