Resumen
This study describes the histopathological changes in the livers of guinea pigs following consecutive administration of ivermectin (IVM). Fifteen guinea pigs were randomly assigned to three groups (n=5): G0 (control) received no IVM, G1 received 200 µg/kg BW/day SC, and G2 received 400 µg/kg BW/day SC, both for 25 consecutive days. The guinea pigs were euthanized on day 26, their livers were extracted, and histological sections stained with haematoxylin and eosin were obtained. Liver changes were classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Microscopic alterations were observed in G1 and G2, while G0 showed normal histology. In G1, three guinea pigs (3/5) presented mild liver lesions, and two (2/5) showed moderate lesions. In G2, three guinea pigs (3/5) developed mild lesions and two (2/5) showed mild to moderate lesions. No severe liver lesions were identified. All five guinea pigs in G1 presented lobular congestion, with two showing canalicular hyperplasia. In G2, all presented with lobular congestion, while four showed parenchymal fibrosis and infiltration by polymorphonuclear and mononuclear cells. This group also showed canalicular hyperplasia and centrilobular congestion. In addition, focal haemorrhage and oedema were detected in two guinea pigs in G2. It was concluded that repeated administration of IVM causes mild liver alterations in guinea pigs. © Los autores.
