Resumen

Introduction: Passion fruit (Passiflora mollissima) and lucuma (Pouteria lucuma), fruits native to the Andes, possess high antioxidant capacity due to their components. Objective: The hepatoprotective effect of dry extracts of passion fruit and lucuma was compared in rats (Rattus norvegicus var. albinus) in an experimental model induced by paracetamol. Materials and methods: This was a quantitative study using an in vivo paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity model. The Folin-Ciocalteu method was used to determine the total phenol content. The hepatoprotective effect of the fruits was evaluated using 20 rats, which were randomly divided into a control group, a negative group, and three experimental groups (I, II, and III). Paracetamol was administered at a dose of 200 mg/kg, except to the control group. The experimental groups received (I) 600 mg/kg of passionfruit extract, (II) 1400 mg/kg of lucuma dry extract, and (III) 600 mg/kg of a mixture of extracts from both fruits at the same doses. The treatment lasted 7 days, and hepatotoxicity was evaluated using histological methods. Results: The highest concentration of total phenols was found in the tumbo with 213.15 GAE/100 g in fresh fruit followed by the mixture with a concentration of 78.53 GAE/100 g in fresh fruit and lucuma with a lower concentration of phenols. 22.14 GAE/100 g in fresh fruit. In the histopathological results, experimental groups I, II and III presented a hepatoprotective effect, with experimental group I (tumbo) having the greatest hepatoprotective effect, followed by experimental group II (lucuma) and finally the mixture (tumbo and lucuma). Conclusions: The extracts administered have a hepatoprotective effect, having a greater effect only tumbo group.
