Helping Others during Illness and Death: The hospitals of Colonial Lima; [A ajuda ao outro durante a doença e a morte: os hospitais da Lima colonial]

Rivasplata Varillas P.E. · Cultura de los Cuidados (2026) · DOI: 10.14198/cuid.30623

Resumen

This paper aims to study the evolution of hospitals in Lima during the colonial era. The methodology applied was heuristics and hermeneutics, using historical sources compiled in the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Lima and the General Archive of the Indies in Seville, as well as secondary sources from various libraries. The research concluded that Lima hospitals played a fundamental role in colonial Lima society, helping and assisting the needy during illness and, above all, during the dying process. However, they required constant financial support, especially from local and metropolitan authorities.
