HEAT ISLANDS IN INDUSTRIAL ZONES: THE CASE OF LAMBAYEQUE, PERU

Sánchez Rodríguez R.K.; García Díaz L.J.; Vargas Chozo O.V.M. · Revista Geografica de Chile Terra Australis (2025) · DOI: 10.23854/07199562.2025612.sanchez

Resumen

The advance of civilization intensifies complex environmental phenomena, where urban growth and industrial expansion generate urban heat islands (UHI), one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. This study focuses on sector 14013 of Lambayeque, a city in northern Peru, an industrial zone with high manufacturing activity, mainly rice grain milling and automotive commerce. Previous work indicates that urbanized areas tend to accumulate heat, increasing surface temperatures compared to rural areas. Remote sensing with LandSat 8 satellite imagery identified areas with temperatures between 30°C and 36°C, linked to factories and other industrial sites, allowing an assessment of the extent and thermal intensity in the area. The analysis includes a review of the urban image, infrastructure and citizen perception, revealing a lack of green areas and poor planning, factors that aggravate thermal conditions and reduce the quality of life. The results highlight the need for comprehensive solutions that address architectural, social and environmental aspects, suggesting sustainable urban planning strategies and building policies that prioritize energy efficiency and climate adaptation. This study concludes that heat islands in industrial areas require urgent attention to mitigate their negative effects on the urban population and the environment.
