Health science teachers’ perceptions of the use of qualitative research: a phenomenological study

Zenteno Guerra A.B.; Montalvo Apolín D.E. · Frontiers in Education (2026) · DOI: 10.3389/feduc.2026.1884070

Resumen

Introduction – In Latin America, Peruvian university faculty are strengthening their scientific output, and qualitative research is gaining relevance due to its capacity to illuminate the human dimension of health processes and the socio-emotional determinants that cannot be captured through quantitative measurements. The innovative contribution of this study lies in incorporating this approach into ethical and contextualized training aimed at developing interpretive and reflective sensitivity across disciplines, particularly in the health sciences. The objective was to analyze the perceptions of university faculty in the health sciences regarding the use of qualitative research in the health field, considering their experiences, the factors that hinder or facilitate its application, the contributions they recognize, and the gaps they encounter. Methodology – A descriptive, crosssectional, and interpretive phenomenological approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Twelve faculty members from public and private Peruvian universities participated, selected through convenience sampling. Results – The results revealed positive perceptions regarding the relevance and practicality of qualitative methods in the health field and identified gaps related to motivation, limited experience, scarcity of methodological-technological tools, and the shortage of qualified faculty to guide these processes. Conclusion – The study concludes that it is necessary to expand available resources, strengthen training in qualitative studies, and promote their use, as well as foster interdisciplinary approaches that integrate pedagogical and health perspectives to consolidate qualitative methodology in university education.
