Healing effect of a poultice based on four medicinal plants on incised lesions in albino rats

Araujo J.L.; Pauta G.M. · Revista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Peru (2026) · DOI: 10.15381/rivep.v37i1.30790

Resumen

The aim of this study was to determine the healing effect of a poultice made from plantain (Plantago major), aloe vera (Aloe vera), arnica (Achyrocline alata), and rose evening primrose (Oenothera rosea) on incised wounds in albino rats compared to zinc oxide formulated in the commercial paste Sanitol®. Twenty-two male albino rats were anesthetized and subjected to an 8.0 mm puncture ontheir backs. The rats were randomly and equally distributed into group A, which received topical treatment with the poultice, and group B, which received topical application of Sanitol®. Wound healing was assessed by macroscopic examination and the rate of wound contraction on days 3, 7, 14, and 21 after treatment application. Data were analysed using repeated measures ANOVA. The time x treatment interaction showed significant differences (pO.001) in favour of treatment A. It is concluded that the poultice was more effective than a conventional treatment for the treatment of dermal lesions in veterinary medicine. © Los autores.
