Resumen
The purpose of this research was to determine the haematological parameters of juvenile and adult female and male pigeons (Columba livia) with haemoproteosis from the coast of Lambayeque, Peru. Between May and October 2023, blood samples were collected from 47 females and 52 males in EDTA tubes. Erythrocyte and leukocyte counts were obtained according to Natt and Herrick, haematocrit was measured by microhematocrit, and haemoglobin was measured by cyanmethemoglobin. Blood smears stained with Wright stain were analysed to evaluate the differential count of leukocytes, platelets, and parasitaemia. Erythrocyte counts were below normal, while platelet counts were within the normal range. Leukocyte counts were significantly elevated, with lymphocytes below the reported normal range for the species. Parasite density was low in all categories, and the H:L ratio was quite high. The pigeons presented with macrocytic and hypochromic haemolytic anaemia, marked leucocytosis, heterophilia, monocytosis, and lymphopenia, and mild parasitaemia in the chronic phase. Juvenile females showed the greatest stress caused by the disease. ©Los autores.
