Greening Urban Living: Designing an Intelligent Hydroponic System with Automatic Nutrient Regulation for Small-Space Agriculture

Becerra-Ramirez A.; Merino-Gonzalez A.; Acuna-Condori K. · Proceedings of the 2023 IEEE 30th International Conference on Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computing, INTERCON 2023 (2023) · DOI: 10.1109/intercon59652.2023.10326065

Resumen

Amid the pressing issue of dwindling cultivation space in urban hubs, including Lima, there's an increasing demand for inventive solutions that counter the limitations of conventional farming. This study unveils a hydroponic system integrated with microcontroller technology, specifically tailored for constrained urban spaces like apartment balconies. The system's core strength lies in its ability to automate pivotal farming parameters, including pH regulation, water circulation, and nutrient dosing, with a focus on California lettuce as the chosen crop. Through a seamless blend of quantitative and qualitative methods, the research not only sheds light on the nuances of designing such a system within tight spaces but also emphasizes its role in promoting sustainable, self-sufficient food production, reducing the environmental impact inherent to traditional farming. The outcomes of this research present more than just theoretical knowledge; they provide a pragmatic framework readily adaptable to various urban settings, including Lima. This study stands as a testament to the possibilities of hydroponic systems in modern urban agriculture, potentially guiding similar ventures in cities worldwide towards more sustainable and efficient farming solutions.
