Resumen
Glacier areas and snowline elevations of glaciers in five mountains of Cordillera Huaytapallana, Central Peru for years 1984 and 2011 were compared to detect which indicators had statistically significant differences across time. Results suggest that glacier areas and lower snowlines (1st percentile) of years 1984 and 2011 differed. An understanding of the physical processes behind changes in lower snowlines and absence of changes in upper snowlines (99th percentile) is needed for further refinement of current deglaciation explanation in the region. As the accumulation and ablation zones of a glacier may be separated by the mean snowline or another statistical estimator, changes across time in lower snowlines may be suggesting the existence of a specific deglaciation trend for these snowlines that might differ from deglaciation processes for upper snowlines. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
