Geolocation and Biometric Authentication System for the Registration of Attendance in Educational Centers

Ramon F.S.; Chavez Melendez C.E.; Cerda Garcia R.O. · Proceedings of the 2024 IEEE 4th International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies for Education and Research, ICALTER 2024 (2024) · DOI: 10.1109/icalter65499.2024.10819242

Resumen

Attendance recording is a crucial process in universities, it's necessary to accurately measure student participation and engagement in their courses. Traditional attendance methods, such as manual paper-based systems, are prone to human error, are time consuming, and can lead to problems such as inaccuracies in record keeping and fraud. This study addresses these problems by proposing a geolocation and biometric authentication system for recording attendance in educational institutions. The system uses fingerprint sensors and GPS technology embedded in cell phones to automate the attendance process. Simulation results showed a significant reduction in the time required to register attendance, decreasing from an average of 3,7967 minutes using manual methods to 0,2339 minutes with the proposed system, reflecting an improvement of 93,84%. In addition, the system achieved an accuracy rate of 83% [5] in validating attendance, substantially minimizing human error and fraudulent entries. This approach improves the flow of classes, optimizes the use of time, and provides a reliable and efficient solution for attendance registration in educational institutions. Future enhancements include integration with virtual classrooms, improved GPS accuracy, and strengthened data security measures.
