Genetic detection of carbapenemase producing Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from clinical symptoms of dogs and cats

Resumen

In recent decades, carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains with a high dissemination capacity have been identified, representing a critical threat to public health. Studies in companion animals are scarce, so the objective of this study was to detect carbapenemase genes in K. pneumoniae isolates from dogs and cats. Twenty-seven K. pneumoniae isolates from the strain collection of the Bacteriology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos were evaluated using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique for the detection of the blaOXA-48, blaKPC, blaNDM, blaIMP-1 and blaIMP-2 genes. Of the 27 isolates, 14.8% (4/27) were positive for carbapenemase genes, with 11.1% (3/27) being positive for blaOXA-48 from canine cases and 3.7% (1/27) positive for blaKPC and blaNDM from a cat strain. No isolates were positive for blaIMP. This study provides evidence of the presence of carbapenem resistance genes in Klebsiella pneumoniae from dogs and cats in Peru, highlighting the potential role of pets in the dissemination of resistant bacteria. © Los autores.
