Resumen

The objective of this study was to review the general situation of Audiovisual Translation (AVT) in Peru and to understand the connection between learned skills and those currently required by the labour market, emphasising the most-required methods of AVT and what this involves for experienced practitioners, whether amateurs or professionals. Two instruments were used: The first one was an in-depth interview with five CEOs of the best translation companies in Peru. The second instrument was a questionnaire which was applied to twenty translators of AVT who provided information about the skills acquired at university and those gained during their professional careers, and to make some suggestions, as gleaned from their answers, to change the content of the translation and interpreting programmes. It was concluded that the current level of audiovisual translation in Peru has a low demand, but has the possibility to increase. Regarding the languages worked in these types of audiovisual translations, it is agreed that English is the main language used. In conclusion, freelance translators account for more than 70% of the translation assignments worked, while the other 30% belong to national and international companies. University students of translation and interpreting should not only focus on perfecting their language skills, but they should also put greater emphasis on developing their soft skills.
