From Aves sin nido to El año del viento: The Contiguity of Two Founding Fictions

Chávez O.S. · Letras (Peru) (2024) · DOI: 10.30920/letras.95.142.9

Resumen

Aves sin nido (1889), by Clorinda Matto de Turner, and El año del viento (2021), by Karina Pacheco, are two Peruvian novels that belong to different times and contexts; However, they present several features in common: due to their theme, they belong to the genre of foundational fictions, the two novels present allegorical characters and underlying them is a deep questioning of the patriarchal order and male hegemony. It should be noted that this critical attitude has its origin in the intimacy of the female characters and in their educational or training experience, in their writing and reading activities, as well as in their knowledge of injustice and social inequality. Furthermore, a coincidence between the two aforementioned works is evident: the fact that the characters are an incarnation of the country generates that, within the world represented, a network of communicating vessels is established between the individual space and the social space, which allows the reader to better understand that reality and their own. In this way, one of the effects produced by reading both works is that the reader can also assume the expectations of the characters, especially those who have some relationship with national construction and the desire for the transformation of the country.
