Resumen
The frequency, severity, and recovery of iron deficiency anemia in children aged 6 months to 5 years were determined through an observational, descriptive, and retrospective study that included 158 children with iron deficiency anemia in Chorrillos. The diagnosis was based on a baseline hemoglobin level < 11.0g / dL and iron treatment; recovery was defined as a hemoglobin level ≥ 11.0g / dL within six months after treatment initiation. The frequency was 7.3, and the recovery rate was 10.8. Males (56.3), young infants (55.1), mild anemia (81.0), and ferrous sulfate treatment (56.3) predominated; likewise, the median age was ten months and the median hemoglobin level was 10.5g / dL. The prescribed treatment (iron polymaltose or ferrous sulfate) differed according to anemia severity (p = 0.045), and recovery differed according to baseline hemoglobin level (p = 0.022). Therefore, iron deficiency anemia was frequent, and its therapeutic recovery was limited in this population.
