Frequency and type of radiological alterations in the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints in clinically healthy Peruvian Paso Horses

Patrón M.C.R.; Monge C.G.; Betancourt E.O.; Quispe S.A. · Revista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Peru (2025) · DOI: 10.15381/rivep.v46i5.28352

Resumen

The present study analysed the frequency and type of radiological alterations in the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints in young (1-3 years old) Peruvian Paso Horses (CPP) from three breeding farms in the Cieneguilla district, Lima, Peru. In total, 67 clinically healthy horses (22 males and 45 females) were evaluated through radiographic images using digital radiography equipment (five images for both forelimbs: D30Pr-PaDiO, LM, Flexed LM, D10Pr45L-PaDiMO and D10Pr45M-PaDiLO and four images for both hindlimbs: D30Pr-PlDio, LM, D10Pr45PiDiMO and D10Pr45M-PlDiLO). The results were evaluated according to anatomical location and type of alteration. In addition, the association between the frequency of alterations and the variables age, sex, height, weight and type of management was evaluated. The presence of some radiographic alteration was found in 76.1% (51/67) of the horses, with the presence of osteoarthritis being the most common finding (43.3%), followed by the presence of radiolucent abnormalities in the sagittal crest of the third metacarpal or metatarsal bone. These changes had a positive correlation with the variables of age and weight in the CPP studied. This descriptive evaluation will serve as base radiographic information of the metacarpophalangeal and metatarsophalangeal joints of Peruvian Paso Horses to correlate these findings with their clinical significance in the future. ©Los autores.
