Resumen
Introduction: Helicobacter pylori infection is common in developing countries and causes gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. Objective: To determine the frequency and characteristics associated with H. pylori infection in symptomatic patients from a private clinic in Celendín, Cajamarca, Peru. Material and methods: A cross-sectional and retrospective study was carried out on 198 symptomatic patients from March 2019 to April 2022. Data was collected by documenting medical records. Results: The study population was characterized by an average age of 39.4 years, 3 years of illness, and a predominance of females (65.7 %), living in an urban area (66.2 %), and teaching/student occupation (38.9 %). Age under 60 years (p=0.011) and urban home area (p=0.048) were associated with a higher frequency of infection. Likewise, the time of illness (p<0.001) and body mass index (p=0.034), was positively correlated with the levels of the test. Conclusion: H. pylori infection is common and is related to age, home area, and BMI of patients.
