Resumen

The fluorescent photoproducts of three phenothiazine derivatives, e.g., chlorpromazine (CPZ), trifluoperazine (TFP) and fluphenazine (FPZ) were studied in aqueous buffered solutions. The photoreactions were monitored by UV-VIS absorption and steady state fluorescence spectroscopy. UV-laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) was used to help photoproduct identification. Irradiations were carried out at pH 7.4 with UV-light of 310 nm. Fluorescent photoproducts of TFP and FFZ (peak at 410 nm) appeared only in the presence of molecular oxygen and were identified as sulfoxide derivatives. Instead, in the absence of oxygen a fluorescent photoproduct of CPZ arises with a three-line vibrational structure and main peak at 355 nm. LDI-MS proved that dechlorination is the pathway for CPZ photobinding, producing dimers and higher order polymers.
