Resumen
This article reviews two highly prevalent medical conditions: abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), highlighting their impact on women's health and quality of life. It is noted that AUB, particularly HMB, is associated with iron deficiency and anemia, which not only affect physical health but also emotional well-being and work productivity. The importance of early detection and appropriate management to prevent long-term complications is emphasized. The article reviews the physiology of menstrual bleeding, the structural and non-structural causes of AUB according to the PALM-COEIN classification, and the relevance of iron metabolism in these conditions. Additionally, it discusses the epidemiology of AUB and HMB, noting that these conditions are underdiagnosed, which perpetuates their negative impact. Methods: for diagnosing HMB in clinical practice are proposed, including qualitative tools such as questionnaires, and the importance of a comprehensive approach that considers the impact of bleeding on patients’ quality of life is highlighted. Finally, treatment strategies for HMB and iron deficiency are discussed, emphasizing the need for individualized and appropriate management.
